What This Site Covers

North and Field documents the drainage infrastructure and land reclamation history of the Pianura Padana — the Po Plain of northern Italy. The focus is on the period from roughly 1860 to 1960, when the most extensive hydraulic works were carried out: the construction of the bonifica canal networks, the installation of mechanical pump stations, and the legislative and institutional frameworks that organised these efforts.

The site does not advocate for any particular position on the historical significance or contemporary management of reclaimed land in the Po Valley. Its purpose is to record and contextualise engineering and historical facts using publicly available sources.

Sources and Standards

Content is drawn from published academic and technical literature, Italian Wikipedia where it cites documentary sources, the published archives of the bonifica consortia, and cartographic and photographic records held in public collections.

Photographs used on this site are sourced exclusively from Wikimedia Commons and are either in the public domain or licensed under Creative Commons licences that permit reproduction with attribution. Each photograph caption includes the source and licence information.

Statistical and quantitative data are not used unless they come from identifiable published sources. Where precise figures are unavailable, descriptive language is used instead of approximations.
